The series of events after which the Pentagon built the modern reporting system
Following an upgrade to AESA radars, US Navy pilots began routinely recording objects in Atlantic training areas — in some accounts almost daily. The series led to changed reporting procedures and, indirectly, to the creation of AARO.
Official position
The Navy introduced formal UAP reporting procedures. The events remain largely unidentified.
Alternative hypotheses
- Unmanned systems, domestic or foreign, operating in the exercise areas.
- Balloons and drifting objects — a share of cases was later identified this way.
- Artefacts of a new and far more sensitive AESA radar, previously invisible to older equipment.
The most important observation about this series
The rise in reports coincided with the radar upgrade to AESA.
That correlation has to be stated honestly and in both directions:
Reading A: a better sensor began detecting something that had been there all along but was invisible.
Reading B: a better sensor began generating new classes of artefact and detecting prosaic objects that had previously fallen below the detection threshold.
Both readings predict exactly the same thing: a sudden rise in reports after the upgrade. Public data is insufficient to separate them.
Institutional significance
This series, not Nimitz, is the true beginning of modern US policy on UAP. It produced the reporting procedures, then the 2021 ODNI report, and ultimately the establishment of AARO.
