A rotating object whose rotation is probably the camera's
ATFLIR footage showing a lens-shaped object that performs a distinct rotation of about 90° during the clip. The soundtrack captures the crew's surprise. The Department of Defense confirmed the material's authenticity.
Official position
The DoD confirmed the footage is authentic; the event remains unidentified.
Alternative hypotheses
- Image rotation produced by the ATFLIR gimbal passing through a particular angle — the object's shape stays constant while the sensor's reference frame rotates.
- The thermal signature of a distant aircraft's engine seen from behind, with glare masking the actual shape.
- A genuine object performing a rotation.
The core of the dispute
GIMBAL is cited above all for the object’s rotation. It is the element hardest to reconcile with known technology — and simultaneously the element most susceptible to an instrumental explanation.
The ATFLIR system is gimbal-mounted, and at certain viewing angles the mount rolls the image reference frame. In that case what rotates is not the object but the frame in which we see it — and an object of constant shape gives the impression of turning.
Settling it requires the pod’s metadata: gimbal angle per frame, operating mode, range to target. That data exists. It is not public.
The correct status
Authenticity of the footage: confirmed by the DoD. Anomaly of the object: unresolved and probably resolvable, were the metadata released. This is a rare case where very little is missing.
