A state mapping camera firing on a timer, and one frame nobody has been able to account for
During a government aerial survey for a hydroelectric project, a cartographic camera firing automatically every 13 seconds recorded a sharp disc-shaped object over Lago de Cote. Nobody on board saw anything; the object was noticed in processing, and it appears on one frame and on neither neighbour.
Official position
None. The Instituto Geográfico Nacional made no determination. The negative was retained in state custody.
Alternative hypotheses
- An emulsion defect or an optical artefact of the lens. Independent examinations report a defined edge and illumination consistent with the sun angle of the rest of the frame, which is not what defects usually look like.
- An object on or just above the water, such as a boat or floating debris. The disc overlaps the shoreline, which constrains the geometry but does not settle it.
- An insertion made during processing. No analysis has reported evidence of montage, and the negative has stayed with the state since the flight.
Why a photograph with no witness is one of the stronger artefacts here
Almost every famous UFO photograph has the same defect: a person decided to take it. Someone chose the moment, the framing and the exposure, and then chose whether to keep the result. Every one of those choices is a place where a picture can be made rather than taken.
This frame has none of them. A cartographic camera bolted into a survey aircraft fired on a timer every 13 seconds. Nobody aimed it at anything. Nobody on board reported seeing an object. The disc was found later, by someone looking at a strip of survey film for an entirely different reason: the mapping of a valley that would be flooded for the Arenal hydroelectric scheme.
That is what provenance means here. Not that the object is unexplained, but that the mechanism which produced the image had no interest in the object at all.
What the frame supports
The image is a high-resolution black-and-white negative from a precision instrument, held by a state agency, with a flight record establishing altitude, time and interval. Reviewers who have examined it report a defined edge, illumination consistent with the rest of the frame, and no sign of montage.
The 13-second interval matters more than it appears. If the disc were a defect in the film or the optics, it would have no reason to appear on exactly one exposure. Its absence from both neighbours means that whatever produced it was present for a period shorter than the interval, or moved out of frame within it.
What the frame does not support
It does not establish size, distance or altitude. A photograph taken from a single station cannot. The disc overlaps the shoreline, which places some geometric constraints on where it can be, but a constraint is not a measurement. Anyone quoting a diameter for this object is quoting an assumption about range with the assumption removed.
It also has no second channel. There is no radar track, no second camera, no witness, no ground report. On the scale used here that costs the case heavily, and it should. One instrument recording one anomaly is exactly the situation in which an instrument fault is hardest to rule out.
What would settle it
A high-resolution scan of the original negative, published with the adjacent frames and the flight log, would let anyone repeat the analysis instead of taking it on trust. Photogrammetry against the mapped shoreline, which is the whole point of a survey frame, could narrow the object’s position along the line of sight far better than any published estimate has.
The material to do this exists and is in one place. That is more than most cases in this database can say.
