Voronezh
The Soviet news agency TASS announces a UFO landing in a city park
The TASS agency issued a dispatch reporting the landing of an object and the emergence of a being from it. The report circulated worldwide as the first such statement from an official Soviet agency.
Official position
No state investigation. The TASS dispatch was not the product of an inquiry.
Alternative hypotheses
- Play and confabulation among a group of children, amplified by the atmosphere of perestroika and the sudden opening of the media to paranormal subjects.
- Over-interpretation of a local report by a press agency.
A methodological warning: “official” is not “investigative”
Voronezh is in the database as a counter-example. The case is cited as “the USSR officially confirmed a UFO landing”. In reality we have a press agency dispatch, not a report from a research institution.
The state character of the publisher does not raise the source tier. What matters is whether an investigation stands behind the statement — not who published it. We apply that distinction consistently across the database.
