Varginha
A Brazilian legend of a captured being, and a case almost entirely second-hand
Three young women reported seeing an unusual creature in the town. An elaborate narrative grew around the account, involving a military capture operation, transport to a hospital, and the death of the captured being.
Official position
The Brazilian armed forces denied conducting any such operation. No documentation supports it.
Alternative hypotheses
- Misidentification of an ill or homeless person in poor lighting.
- A narrative constructed secondarily on the basis of a brief primary account.
Why the score is low despite enormous popularity
Varginha is to Brazil what Roswell is to the United States — and it has exactly the same structural problem.
The primary account is short and modest: three people saw something unusual. Everything else — the military, the hospital, the body, the covert transport — comes from narrative layers added later, by people who saw nothing themselves.
The case is in the database as an example of what a case built almost entirely from T4 and T5 sources looks like. It is a necessary reference point: without it, one cannot see how sharply it differs from Trans-en-Provence or Tehran.
