Airport staff watch a disc over Terminal C — with no radar check and no investigation
A dozen airport employees reported a grey disc-shaped object hovering over Gate C17, which then departed vertically at speed, said to leave a hole in the cloud layer.
Official position
The FAA conducted no formal investigation, treating the event as a weather phenomenon (a hole-punch cloud).
Alternative hypotheses
- A fallstreak hole produced by a passing aircraft — explains the hole, explains the object less well.
- Reflections of airport lighting in a low cloud base.
- A genuine object.
Why this is a case about institutions, not about an object
Over one of the most closely monitored airports in the world, a dozen professional aviation observers report an object — and nobody checks the radar record.
The case is in the database as documentation of a procedural gap. In 2006 the United States had no pathway by which a report from aviation personnel could reach analysis. The mechanism that would handle it was created only after 2020.
The evidential value of the event itself stays low: no radar, no photograph, no investigation. Not because nothing happened — but because nobody preserved anything.
