Brazilian air defence radars detected multiple unidentified targets simultaneously. Mirage III and F-5E fighters were scrambled; some crews reported radar and visual contact. The Air Minister confirmed the event at a press conference.

Official position

The Brazilian Air Force publicly confirmed the detections and intercepts; the nature of the targets was never established.

Alternative hypotheses

  • Weather and experimental balloons in the region.
  • Anomalous radar propagation under unusual atmospheric conditions.
  • Genuine targets of undetermined nature.

Why this is one of the strongest radar events in the world

Three things at once: multiple independent radar stations, multiple scrambled aircraft of different types, and public confirmation at ministerial level within days.

That last point is close to unprecedented internationally. In most states confirmation arrives after decades, or never. Brazil confirmed immediately — which paradoxically left the case far less famous than Rendlesham, about which its government said nothing at all.
