An RAAF sighting over Australia's nuclear test range
A formal sighting report filed on the standard RAAF form, working sequentially through meteor, static electricity effects, satellite and “flying saucer” — without resolution.
Official position
The report was closed without identification.
Alternative hypotheses
- Satellite fragment re-entry or a bolide.
- An electrostatic phenomenon in dry desert air.
Why this minor case is in the database
Not for the strength of the sighting — that is unremarkable. For the form.
The Australian report shows what disciplined state handling of UAP looked like outside the United States: a list of hypotheses to be worked through in order, with “flying saucer” as one of the boxes rather than as a conclusion. This is precisely how GEIPAN and AARO work today.
The case is also proof that archives outside the US exist, are complete and are accessible — and that most English-language UFO literature has never looked into them.
