Operação Prato
A Brazilian Air Force field operation in response to a wave of reports on Colares island
Following a wave of reports of luminous objects and injuries among residents, the Brazilian Air Force deployed a detachment to the island tasked with documenting the phenomenon. An extensive body of reports, sketches and photographs resulted, declassified decades later.

Alternative hypotheses
- Balloons, aircraft and atmospheric phenomena in a region with very poor observational infrastructure.
- Collective panic amplified by the military presence and media attention.
- Resident injuries of a medical aetiology unrelated to the phenomenon.
Significance: the state sent soldiers to watch
Operação Prato is one of very few cases worldwide in which a government deployed a military unit into the field with orders to systematically document UAP. Only the American Project Twinkle and the Norwegian Hessdalen expedition are comparable.
A large volume of material was gathered. Its instrumental quality, however, is low: the photographs are poor, there is no radar, there are no range measurements. What we received is an extensive, well-documented body of accounts — not a body of measurements.
The medical component
Reports of injuries to residents are the most heavily exploited element of this case and the least documented. No publicly available medical record permits the described symptoms to be attributed to any specific cause.
