Six photographs, one Harrier, and a file the Ministry of Defence returned thirty years later
Two young men took six photographs of a large, static diamond-shaped object, near which a military aircraft passed. The negatives were passed to the Ministry of Defence and lost; a single copy surfaced only in 2022.
Official position
The MOD has not disclosed a determination. The original negatives remain unlocated.
Alternative hypotheses
- A hoax using a model — analysis of the surfaced copy cannot settle it, given reproduction quality.
- A classified aircraft under test — the Scottish region was used for test flying.
- An optical phenomenon or reflection.
Why this is a case about provenance, not about an object
Calvine is the best example in the database of how the loss of source material closes a case without resolving it.
Six negatives existed. They went to a state institution. They are gone. Everything we analyse today is a reproduction of a reproduction — on which grain analysis, sharpness and depth-of-field analysis cannot be performed, which is precisely the work that would settle the model-on-a-line question.
The case is therefore open not because the object is inexplicable, but because the evidence vanished inside an administration. That is a separate and very real category of problem in this field.
