Police Shoot Unarmed Caregiver Of Autistic Man
North Miami police shot an unarmed man named Charles Kinsey on July 18th, 2016. Officers were responding to a call about a man who was allegedly walking around with a "gun" and "talking about suicide." The man turned out to be autistic and his gun was a toy truck. Kinsey, who is his caregiver, reacted by lying on the ground with his hands up. He pleaded for he officers to put their guns away, but was also focused on keeping his patient calm.
While Kinsey was trying to diffuse the situation, an officer shot him in the leg. He was then handcuffed, flipped over, and left lying in blood for twenty minutes before being taken to a hospital. His wound is not life threatening, but his lawyer think he should press charges. Kinsey told reporters that "I thought it was a mosquito bite, and when it hit me I had my hands in the air, and I'm thinking I just got shot!"
